Leaning back against the tree trunk, book propped up against her knees, Ally turned another page, not really taking in the words before her. If she was honest then she'd have to admit that she hadn't read single word of the book, and yet somehow she was page 26. She couldn't even remember the name of the book, actually, now that she thought about it. Flipping the book closed, she reread the title, remembering with a small nod. The Uprising of Golkin the Green; not the most exciting read. In fact, if it hadn't been a birthday gift from her cousin then she would never have bothered to even open it in the first place.
Looking up from her book, she smiled softly as she watched a group of first play a game of catch with a fanged frisbee. They looked so carefree that it was almost surreal. How could they derive such great pleasure from the simple act of throwing and catching a piece of plastic that was determined to bite off ones fingers? Nevertheless, the look of pure enjoyment on their faces was amusing, and somewhat comforting. Deciding that she'd give her book another go, she opened to a random page and forced herself to read.

The smirk upon his face, the look of triumph was more than visible upon the seventeen years olds face. You would have thought that he had just won some beat, resulting on his being given at least a hundred gallons, maybe even just been told that he had been voted the best looking student in Hogwarts, no actually, he already knew that one. Or maybe he had even just been asked out by the girl he had been fantasying about being with for years. Perhaps he had just been offered the job as auror when he finished Hogwarts, his dream to follow in his fathers footsteps. However none of these were true. James had in fact just finished with his girlfriend. Only five minutes ago was his eyes filled with sorrow, his body language of one that was being forced to do something that he really didn’t want to go along with.
“It’s not you,” he explained to a tearful girl that was not left alone on the Quidditch pitch, “It’s me, I just don’t think I’m ready for a relationship. You know how much my school work is suffering and it being my last year and all. As soon as this is all over I’ll be straight back to you baby I promise. You the only girl for me, just not right now.” And as soon as his back was turned upon her did he wear the facial expression he did now. Gaud didn’t it feel good to be free, single again and the girls were at his pick once more. Okay so James wasn’t the most honest of people when it came to breaking up relationships but she had been stupidly over protective from the beginning. Everyone knew about James Potter, his popularity, his flirtatious manner and his title of being the player of Hogwarts, but they still went out with him. More fool them really, perhaps they thought they would be the ones the change him, show him what love was?
The cool winters air breathed through the boys dark brown hair, the sun hung brightly in the sky giving the lakes waters a warm glow. It was the perfect winters afternoon, more like spring but then England’s weather was so random he had come to expect it. Wearing his usual red Converse trainers, faded light blue jeans and white hoodie he walked along the edge of the lake. His light blue eyes studying each and every girl that he might pass, each one he had already been with before. He had to admit that he did have a bloody good memory for the girls he had been out with, after all he hardly wanted to get with someone he had already been with before now did he.
And then he saw her, a blonde girl under a tree, nose buried in a book with some slight confusion fixed upon her face. James bit his bottom lip as his studied her features for just a second before agreeing with himself that she wasn’t an ex of him. A wide smile now crossed his lips as he changed course from the castle towards the blonde. Without an invitation he sat next to her, his hands buried in his jeans pocket he looked from the girl to the book. Bending forwards he looked at the title and raised his eyebrows. “Looks like one heck of a book that,” he said as he sat back up, looking down at the page that she had open, “What the hell is Golkin the green, sounds like some sorta evil goblin in a kids book.”

...and then in the revolution of the mountain goblins in 1767, and the dawning of the year of the hippogrif...
Rereading the same line for what had to be the fifth time, Alanna's eyes started to unfocus and her mind began to wander. What homework did she have for Astronomy again? There had been something about a lunar chart and reading a passage... Reading. Right. Giving her head a small shake, she silently scolded herself for losing concentration, and turned her attention back to the book. Again. She loved reading, she really did, and normally she was quite content to bury her nose in just about any text presented before her and get lost for hours. But it was just so nice and warm outside, and the kids were having so much fun playing with that silly toy; and the Squid was waving idly from the Black Lake... Ally! she called to herself mentally, disappointed in the direction her mind was going.
Giving a small determined nod, she read the line yet again, slowly letting herself take in the information. It wasn't half bad, actually, now that she was giving it the attention it deserved. Becoming absorbed in the book in her lap, her eyes roamed from left to right, feeling herself becoming absorbed in the words. Bringing a hand up from where it rested on the ground, she turned another page, intrigued to find out if Hoffon the Hairy was beheaded or if by some twist of fate his body remained in one piece...
So enthralled with the book now that she was in to it, Ally tuned out the world around her, blocking out all noise and movement. It came as a surprise then when she suddenly heard a voice near her; looking up at the rather rude interruption, her gazed landed on the face of the one person in the school every one knew. James Potter. Taking a half second to wonder why in the world he was sitting down next to her of all people, she then fully processed the situation. She was sitting beneath a tree with the school's notorious flirt right beside her. She was so in for it.
"Golkin the Green was the troll tyrant of the late eighteenth century," she answered automatically, mind to busy trying to figure out why he of all people was sitting next to her to realize that she was actually talking to him. "He was the one who started the segregation of the mountain trolls from the valley ones that still continues to this day..." Trailing off, Ally's cheeks tinted pink as she finally processed the situation. "Erm... yeah, it was a gift from my cousin. She knows I like to read..." She wondered if it would be insulting her cousin to admit how dull she had previously found the book, and decided that if he really wanted to know her opinion then he would ask. The book couldn't be the reason he had decided to take a seat to her, however, and she was curious to find out what that reason could be, even if she didn't admit it.
Yeah, I abused the ellipses in this post... sorry about that... but I love 'em!

No he hadn’t been with her before and as his gaze moved over the blonde face he was more than certain of it. Infact he didn’t think he even knew her name, strange for someone like James Potter who normally knew most of the girls names in his year and a year or two below him. She wasn’t in his year, no but the year below she had to be, she didn’t look much younger than himself. Why though had he not noticed this girl before? She was very attractive, but then to be honest James didn’t have much of a standard with women.
Okay so he wouldn’t have fun with the more unpopular girls, she had to at least have some status within the social group of the school and be at least not too bad looking. The prettier girls and more popular ones he would date, but then his dating record wasn’t all that good either. How long was his longest relationship anyway? A month, maybe two? And of course that ended with him cheating on her with her best friend. He couldn’t help it. There were just too many fit girls at Hogwarts. He had officially decided that they knew what he was like so if they decided to go out or have fun with him they would have to deal with the consequences, simple.
James’s eyebrows raised at her explanation to the book in her hands and he tried to repress a laugh. Yes he tried, he tried so bloody hard but he couldn’t help it, he laughed. “Ravenclaw,” he blurted out over his laughter. Yes that was a very judgemental and stereotypical statement but James was a pretty judgemental person, from never giving any Slytherin a chance to of course the girls he picked. “Yeah sounds enlightening,” he continued sarcastically as his laughed died and he shook his head, “How about we put down the book.” Moving his hand to the open book he moved it from her grip, placing it down onto the grass between the two of them before he looked back to the blonde. “How can you be reading when you have…” he looked out to the lake, “…that view in front of you?”
The lake sat silently in the distance only a slight ripple appeared on the waters surface every so often although James’s gaze looked upon further than the black lake. To mountain range that surrounded the accident school, they seemed to almost be dominating them and the boys mind instantly fell upon the subject of exploring. Of course the mountains were too far to reach, at least without a broom and he was sure that they were beyond the schools boundaries.
Rules where there however to be broken but he was sure that he had read somewhere that there was a charm that didn’t allow students outside of the Hogwarts boundaries. However he was a seventh year, maybe he could work out the counter charm? Of course this was a pretty pointless thought, there would be no way that he could work it out but still it couldn’t stop him from thinking as to what adventures he might find up in the mountains.
ooc ll well I hope you abuse me in the same way then... mwah

Giving a surprised look when he started to laugh, she narrowed her eyes in confusion. Had she said something funny and not been aware of it? When he called out the name of her house, however, she felt the need to roll her eyes. Was it really that blatantly obvious that she was in Ravenclaw? And why did people feel the need to point out what house she was from? Did they think she didn't know? As Alanna let her thoughts turn over in her head, she studied James' face, wondering what he was thinking about; if he had the answers she was searching for.
The second surprise came when he removed the book from her hands. "Hey!" she said, half amused and half annoyed. "I really was reading that, you know." Ally followed the path of the book with her eyes, staring at it for a moment when it was set down between them. This situation was getting more strange by the moment. First she was joined by a boy she hadn't said a single word to in her entire life, and then he had taken away her form of entertainment. What was he playing at?
Thinking for a half second about his question, she moved her gaze back over the scenery in front of them. It was rather ideal, she had to admit. For once it wasn't chilly, there was no sign of impending rain, and the creatures in the Forbidden Forest were keeping to themselves. An unusually calm day for Hogwarts - James had a point. Why was did she have her nose in a book when she could be... doing what? Taking a walk, perhaps. Go for a quick dip in the Black Lake. She supposed she could have asked a dorm mate if they had wanted to join her, but who would she ask? She had very few true friends, and spent more time alone then with others.
"It's gorgeous, I will admit," she replied, looking over the horizon. "But it's almost depressing to look at it by yourself. Besides, I happen to enjoy letting myself get lost in books. You never know where they may take you," Alanna said, sending him a small half smile. "So..." she said slowly, not even sure if she wanted to ask the question that she kept tossing around in her head. Blame it on her apparently obvious Ravenclaw nature, but she had to know. "What brings you out here?"
Naturally - although I think I'd prefer to abuse you in a different way =P

“What do you mean you never know where they might take you,” he remarked as he looked away from the scene that lay in front of the two teenagers before picking up the book once more and flipping it over so that he was looking at the back cover. “You just read the back cover to find out what’s going to happen, see,” he moved the book between the two of them so that they could both see, “Bla bla bla… loads of crap, ahhh here we are… the road of the city of goblins can only ever lead to one place, goblin city and the castle that lay beyond a labyrinth with underground… bla bla bla… and it is here where the adventure did end, when Golkin the Green did meet the only fate that was written for him, death.” James scoffed and dropped the book back down to the ancient grounds of Hogwarts, “See it’s a bloody depressing book anyways, don’t wanna be reading that on such a beautiful day like this now do we? You get all emotional on me and that really would just piss me off to be fair.”
James smiled at the girl warmly before his gaze moved back to the mountains. Maybe he should go get his broom now. He hadn’t been flying since he had returned to Hogwarts and damn did he miss it. He could do with a bit of adventure, even if it didn’t lead him anywhere. Dinner was what, a few hours away? Maybe if he used his wand to bring his broom to him he could have a half decent bit of fun flying before going to the Great Hall just as dinner was about to end. Yeah okay so there would only probably be scraps left but the thrill and rush would be more than worth a half empty plate of food. A wide smile crossed the boys lips at just the thought. His mind now drifting away once to what might lay up it the mountains, what a scene it must be to look down from them to Hogwarts School.
He was knocked back into reality by the girls question and mentally shook his head away from his day dream and back into reality. James pulled a sad, confused and worried face. He was extremely good at acting, it was one of his many talents that was abused frequently. His eyes full of remorse, his head hung down and he started picking at the grass by his feet. “My girlfriend just dumped me,” he replied in a rather pathetic tone of voice, “Don’t think it’s really hit me yet, I just erm…” he swallowed hard, “I found out she’d been dating my mate behind my back and when I confronted her about it she just laughed in my face.” He sighed deeply and looked back to the Ravenclaw, “Sorry, didn’t mean to blurt that out, couldn’t help it… I just erm… fancied some company that’s all and you had a friendly face. Sorry, I’ll erm… I’ll leave if you want?”
ooc ll if your not careful we’ll have to mark this thread with a warning, bad bad bad girl lol

"I'm not getting emotional," she protested, unsure whether she was being hypocritical right then or not. Listening to his version of 'getting in to' a book she finally gave in to the desire to roll her eyes. "It's not depressing at all," she informed him with a slight laugh. "It's... informative. And what would great old Golkin the Green say if he heard you talking that way about his history? Well, I guess you'll never find out because you didn't actually read it." Well amused at that point, she smiled over at him, plucking the book from his hands. "Thank you for that interpretation, but I think I'll just find out for myself how the book is." Shaking her head, whether at herself or him she didn't know, she placed her book down on the grass on the other side of her, as if shielding it from him.
Repositioning herself under the tree, she shifted her back in to a more comfortable position against the trunk, stretching out her legs in front of her as she did so. Her feet had gone numb at some point, and the non-stopping, infinite number of pricks were driving her crazy. Ally wriggled her toes, trying to get the feeling back down to them, hoping the blood would start flowing soon. Caught up in what she was doing, it took her a moment before she noticed the look that had over come her companion's face, and the tone of her voice.
Alanna had a weakness for those who needed help, and if the expression he was wearing was anything to go by, James Potter was in desperate need of help. "No," she replied to his offer to leave, a worried look taking over her own face. "You're more than welcome to stay here if you'd like." What else was she supposed to do? Kick the boy out from under the tree when he was obviously hurting? That was the last thing she wanted to do, knowing from personal experience that a simple offer of company could go a long way.
Sure, she had heard all about his romantic life - who didn't? Just because it was rumored that he had been with every female in third year and above (including some of the teachers) didn't make it necessarily true. After all, he had never been with her, had he? Case and point. Besides, a notorious flirt could still have feelings, and James' had obviously been hurt. If she had to be honest she could admit that she would be upset too if her boyfriend broke up with her to date her best friend. That was cruel, and by all means heartless. Not that she had cause to fear for this however. One needs a boyfriend to be dumped by one, after all.
"Are you alright?" What a stupid question - she could see that he wasn't alright. The boy looked practically heartbroken. After scolding herself for being so insensitive, she tried to think of what the best course of action would be. She had never had to console a newly single person before, especially not one she had met five minutes ago. What would a rational person do in this situation? Offer him a hankie...? It couldn't hurt. Except he wasn't crying. Sod that idea. Put her arm around his should in comfort? Not gonna happen. One needed guts to do something like that - and Ally was convinced she wasn't born with any. "That's a silly question - don't mind me. You can stay here as long as you'd like."
ooo - if I'm bad, do I get to be punished? m'kay, I'm stopping now, lol

He could easily have smirked. A great triumph filled his body as he had managed to get this girl now feel the need to comfort him. Shame on her for caring so much, she should be aware that James Potter wasn’t one to get so depressed over a lost relationship. Instead however he smirked inwardly but kept that sadness and confusion fixed upon his face and not until after she had finished speaking did he look back to her. A weak smile crossed his lips, a smile that was forced but at the same time genuine, thanking the girl silently for being understanding to his needs.
“It’s okay,” he replied in the same slight pathetic tone of voice, “It’s not a silly question. I will be though, just need a bit of time to sort my head out, you know? I mean…” he looked away back down to the ground looking completely ashamed with himself, “I know I have this reputation, I ain’t thick and I know what I’ve been branded as but like I have feelings too, I’m not a complete heartless git.” He sighed before looking back to her face, “It’s just I really liked her, she… she was amazing and I really thought she might be the one, you know? I really could see myself actually falling for her properly, maybe even… no that’s stupid.” James shook his head and once more looked away.
He was silent for a few seconds and acted as if he was deep in thought. However in reality his mind moved onto the subject of dinner. damn he was hungry, didn’t really realise it until now. He could really do with some pizza, stuffed crust pizza with pepperoni, yes that sounded very good. “Maybe even…” he continued, “Have fallen in love with her.” James sighed deeply as he leaned back against the tree behind the two, his head leaned back against the trunk and his gaze moved back to the distance. “Sorry,” he whispered to the girl as he turned his head on the tree to look at her, “I don’t even know your name and I’m putting all my worries onto you, but thank you… I really appreciate it, more than you think.”
ooc ll i might have to get those handcuffs out and tie you to the bed i mean... yes that sounds like a plan lol

Listening to him as he spoke, and watching his expression, she smiled sadly. One of the laws of the universe had to be that if you had a heart, it was made to be broken; apparently he had just found that out the hard way. And the poor boy looked as if he was two breaths away from tearing up! What was she supposed to do. Just be nice to him, a small voice in the back of her mind told her, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"I don't think that's stupid at all," she said after a moments contemplation. "And please don't thank me; just don't what anyone with half of a heart would do." Turing her head to look at him, she let her smile turn soft. "My name is Alanna. Sloper... Most people just call me Ally." Plucking a blade of grass from the ground beneath them, she twirled it between her fingers, adding, "unfortunately your reputation precedes you, Mr. James Potter."
Rolling her blade of grass in to a ball, she flicked it from its position on her finger, following the arc it made in the air with her eyes. "I'm glad I can be of some help, though," Ally said, glancing at him out of the corner of her eye. "If there's anything I can do to help, please just ask. I'm not the best person in these situations, so I apologize."
Blind fold me too? How about a paddle? You can bend me over your knee... lol

Stage one was complete. She officially now felt like it was her job to comfort him and make him feel better. He had of course played this game before. Nine out of ten times it worked, manipulation was a strength of this boy, whether of course people saw that as a bad thing or not he didn’t really care. It had served him well when getting what he wanted, especially as he was and could be such a stubborn person when he didn’t get his own way. Of course there was the other times when girls didn’t buy his act. Some where maybe too aware of his reputation or had known that he had played the same act upon one of their friends and that was the time when their palm and his face came into contact. Not that James wasn’t more than used to girls slapping him by now, it nearly always came at the end of every break up.
James smiled warmly at the girl as she introduced herself to him. Okay so she was aware of his reputation, that wasn’t always a good thing but he could work round that. “Yeah,” he replied quietly as he looked back to the distance and bit down on his bottom lip for a few seconds, “Sometimes though I wish I could change that, the way some people see me but I don’t know perhaps I’m just scared that my mates won’t respect me anymore if I did.” The Gryffindor ran his fingers through his dark brown hair as he let out a sigh, playing his words that he had spoken back in his head, as if he was reading a script. “Sometimes I just wanna meet the girl that will change all of that, not that any would give me that chance now.”

Listening as he spoke, and taking in the tone of his voice, the way his hand ran through his hair, Ally really couldn't understand why he had the reputation he did. He was either one hell of an actor or was genuine in what he was saying; while the former was possible, she tried to believe the best in everyone, and right now he needed her to help him. She still wasn't entirely sure that she should be the one for the job, but it looked like fate had other plans, and who was she to change them? Now if he started spouting cheesy pick up lines, as it was rumored he liked to do, then she'd make a break for it. It was entirely possible of course, but rumors weren't always true, and what James was saying at that moment she wouldn't classify as either cheesy or a pick up line; for the time being she was safe.
The one thing Alanna couldn't figure out was why he was opening up to her. To her. She could understand needing to talk about ones emotions, but wasn't that what friends were for? It was the comment about his mates not respecting him anymore that really got her. Maybe that was why he couldn't talk to them...? But still... Turning to look at his face when he said he wanted to find the one who would change his reputation, she ran her eyes over his features slowly, trying to assess them. "I'm sure that there's someone out there somewhere for you. If that's what you really want then I say don't worry about what your friends will think, or what some whispered rumor makes out - go for it."
She paused for a moment to think about the last bit of his statement, and had to admit that there was a very good chance that he was right. Hadn't he already been with every female over third year? "Maybe the girl you're looking for isn't here at Hogwarts," she said logically. He was, after all, a seventh year. He wouldn't have to wait to much longer to leave school and go out in to the world. "You're almost done with your schooling. Why not just for a little bit, see where your life takes you, and then try from there. There are millions of people who don't go to Hogwarts, surely you'll be able to find someone that's right for you."
